I just had my first appointment and the dentist says my top 4 front teeth need a root canal, posts and crowns. He says fillings must be really old because they don't even use that type anymore. He adds there is decay under the old filling and it is almost at the nerve. My questions is: Can this be accurate since I do not feel any pain, my gums are not bleeding and all I went for is a cleaning?

You can get 2nd opinions. Sometimes teeh dont get pain when they have decay. Fillings there different types now i know they are white, gold, silver now and different ones. How long have ya havent been to dentist since sound like you not been one for while.

I'll second that.
The short answer is: it's entirely possible, but when in doubt, it would be a very good idea to get a second opinion. Did the dentist show you the problems on the x-rays?

Hi Jose
I would definitely opt for a second opinion on this one! For your teeth to need that much work I would think you would have be be describing black broken down stumps!! Do they look unsightly? Presumably if you just went for a cleaning they look okay?
I appreciate that teeth can need filling sometimes when there is no obvious problem, but with root canals, posts and crowns you are practically talking about new teeth! I would have thougtht you would have noticed if they are that bad!!!
I have been told various things by various dentists. Nearly 15 years ago I was told a filled tooth needed a root canal and cap. That tooth is still absolutely fine, no problems whatsoever and dentist I saw last week passed it okay. One dentist wanted to replace nearly every filling!
Get two or three opinions if you can. It is no different to taking your car to the garage. One will tell you that there are 23 things wrong with it, another will simply change a spark plug!!! Get some more opinions before you have anything done.

I agree with letsconnect did your dentist tell ya and show your paraomac xray which teeth are bad and show ya where. My did and i was looking at them before he mention anything to me since i was curios what they will look like in xray. tell ya i didnt get 2nd opinion due i knew my teeth were bad i had 6 teeth broken to gum line and 2 teeth in half tooth each. so i got told i could got partial then in long run i would get those other remove and got full denture so i went full denture and he very comfort me i wouldnt have problem. I think there is some fillings not good for health so they dont use those fillings but i believe in your case ya need 2nd opinion and find a dentist someone in your family or friends recommend since i did that and i wont give up that dentist since they best ones.
