So, this is my first post to a message board... ever. Hi, I need some support and thought this would be the place to go. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a dentist for the first time in years. It will also be the first time I leave the house in months. I am a wreck.
My mind keeps going to "What if she says horrible things to me?" and "What if the experience is so terrible I never go back?". I know I need to have work done (I lost a filling over a year ago and I'm ashamed I haven't had it taken care of yet and I'm sure that I have at least one cavity).
I've never met this woman and am not sure what to do. I want to go in tomorrow and have EVERYTHING done in one sitting but I highly doubt that will happen. I know I'll run for the hills if she schedules things too spaced out. How do I bring up all my fears with her? If I feel like she won't be receptive, should I go over them anyway or find someone else? I could be wrong, she could be wonderful but my head just won't go there.
Thank you in advance for reading through all this. This is a great site by the way.

Hello Sister Congrats on making that visit for tomorrow (and for your first post!) Yes, absolutely bring up any fears you have with her. It is your first visit with her, so most likely you will have some time to talk with her before "jumping right in" with treatment. Use this time to see how you feel about her. Is she listening to you and answering your questions so you can understand? Or is she cutting you off before you can finish and explaining things in that crazy dental jargon? You are going to her for treatment, so communication should be a 2-way street. So take advantage of the time to tell her your concerns before she starts work on you. And, if this person is not going to meet your needs, you may need to look for someone else who will. Again, if this is a consultation-type visit, there may not be a whole lot done at the first visit, I'm afraid. Unless there is an emergency situation, she may just examine your teeth and do a cleaning. Any subsequent spacing out of visits may be determined by how busy that dental office is. Obviously, it is possible that this woman may not be right for you. And if she says horrible things to you, by all means run for the hills. But many dentists now are more caring and sensitive to their patient's needs. I know we've discussed mostly if she turns out to be wrong for you, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that she turns out to be wonderful. You never know, she may even change you life. Please let us know how it goes for you. Best of luck tomorrow! -James

Think postive when ya there and ask him for sedative if ya have fear since i ask him from the start but he didnt give me sedative till my treatments.

Everything went better than I thought it would! All I had done today was x-rays on the one offending side and an extraction. In a week I'll go back for a cleaning and we'll go on from there.
She was patient and took time to go over my options which made me feel a little more in control than I had been feeling.
Take care
