Oh, the dentist! Well, lets first start off by saying, I need multiple teeth pulled, multiple teeth filled, and who knows what else! I don't know what happened with me. I wasn't scared at all, now, whenever my mom (I'm 19) mentions me going in, I almost throw up. It's just my imagination, I think. They said they'd give me gas, but I'm not sure about that. What are all your thoughts on that? It really sucks when I'm panicing over the thought, and my 5 year old girl cousin goes in, gets a tooth pulled, and comes out laughing. I'm on the fence, right now. I'm pretty much saying, "Screw this, I'm going in. This is pathetic." But, my mind is saying, "HAHA! You just wait until you get there, then we'll see what's pathetic."WHY DIDN'T I BRUSH MY TEETH?

Eh, don't blame it all on the teeth brushing (or lack thereof). Some people brush religiously to the point of overbrushing and have cavities every visit. Some people never brush and end up with only a cleaning needed. (We don't like those people. ) [Where's an angel smiley to counter the evil one?] But back to being serious. Is there anything in particular about the dentist that is bugging you? Or is it the amount of work you (think?) you will need? I added the "think" in parenthesis because I wasn't sure if you had already gone and were told you would need all of that work, or you are simply thinking you will need it. Did you recently change dentists or have a negative visit that is now making you apprehensive to go? Please feel free to continue posting, especially if "talking" things out make you feel better. Best of luck -James

Thank you for your response. Sorry it took so long to respond, I have been busy with trying to find a job. Over brushing causing cavities? That's a real kick in the face! ha ha Not really. I just have a huge imagination, and I tend to dwell on the what-ifs. They previously told me (2+ years ago) that I need some root-canals, fillings, what-not, and it's only got worse since then. Some of my back teeth are broke off to the point of them almost being flush with my gums. No, but they told me, "Next time you come in, we'll be working on those back teeth." I asked friends if they've had a root-canal, and most of them were saying, "Yes. It hurts." That right there made me scared to go. Althought, I've talked to others, and they say they couldn't feel anything. I don't know who to believe! UPDATE, THOUGH-I have been thinking, and I am going to make an appointment. (Actually am! Today!) It's only going to get worse, right? Might as well do it now. If they hurt me, at least I will be justified when I'm scared of them! ha ha

Also, what's general anesthesia (Laughing gas, or what-not) like? Do you just not know what's happening? Are you asleep? I might be getting brave, but not that brave!

This post is a few weeks old, so I'm not sure if you got the answers to your questions yet, but I'll try to help.
I LOVE the laughing gas that my dentist provides. You're aware of what's going on, but you just feel really relaxed, kind of sleepy, etc. It's nice, because you're awake.
Also, I had the first part of a root canal a few days ago, and it didn't hurt at all. I have to go back to get the rest of it done on Thursday, and the dentist said the part he already did (draining the infection) was the worst of it. So yay!
The general consensus now seems to be that root canals are painless. So I wouldn't worry! I was very, very scared of the pain, and in the end, it turned out to be non-existant.
Where are you located? Maybe someone can suggest a nice, gentle dentist that will make you feel comfortable..
Good luck!
