Hi everyone. I am new to this site. Very glad that I came across it. I am also, like many others, terrified of going to the dentist. I have neglected my teeth for a long time now and need to have about 6 teeth pulled, along with 1 or 2 root canals and countless cavities filled. I have been to 2 different oral surgeons who have refused to treat me unless I have the IV Sedation. I think that I am more nervous about being sedated than having actual dental work done. But, I have an ongoing infection in a couple teeth that is starting to scare me, so I know that my days of neglecting my teeth will have to end. I have decided that I will go through with the IV Sedation, because I don't think that I really have a choice. I have heard some good things about it and I hope that it will be a good experience for me. I would really appreciate it if everyone could share with me their experience with IV Sedation. Hopefully hearing some good stories about it will be beneficial. Thank you in advance!

Hi there , out of interest, why did they refuse to treat you without IV sedation? Are the extractions anticipated to be difficult (in which case it might be a good idea), or is it a matter of "policy"? If it's the latter, there was another poster here (Scott/lvscott) who had a similar experience and managed to find another dentist (his threads have moved to page 2, on the "Dentistry Questions" board). If you have decided to go with IV, the experiences described on this board have been overwhelmingly positive - again, most of them are in the "Dentistry Questions" section, if you want to read through that. But if you really dislike the idea of IV sedation, then you could always look for another dentist. Though the fact that you've seen two oral surgeons might mean that these might be difficult to remove (are you talking about impacted wisdom teeth, for example?). So it's pretty much impossible to give any definitive advice over the Internet!! If you can't find relevant threads, ask again and I'll locate them for you !

Yes, both surgeons refused to treat me without the IV Sedation because they are very decayed teeth, like past the gum line. I also have 3 impacted wisdom teeth, but the oral surgeon that I am seeing now thinks that I can keep them, because the molars next to them are the ones that need to be removed. So, the fact that they are very bad teeth combined with the fact that I sit down in the chair and just start crying are reasons why they want the IV for me. I guess it would be easier then coming in 4 or 5 different times, too. I have read a lot of positive responses to IV Sedation on here. I hope that it will be a good experience for me. I just wanted to see if maybe anyone would not recommend it, like if they were terribly sick when they woke up or something. I don't think I could handle that. Being tired would be okay, but being sick and having open sores in my mouth would be so bad. So far I haven't heard of anyone having that experience. Thank you for responding!

It would be very uncommon to feel sick after IV sedation, and yeah, the experiences of people here who had it have been very positive. If being sick is one of your main concerns, I don't think you've got much to worry about ! Please let us know how you get on, in case you check back!
