Hey, I am not really scared of dentists, it's more of a fear of Needles however to get my teeth taken out for a brace in a few weeks time, I'm terrified of the needle. My dentist gave me a choice of IV Sedation or Needle in the gums, he recommendede Sedation as there's less visits involved. I chose sedation myself - I do not wish to get needles directly in my gum whilst being fully conscious about it! However, the type of sedation that I will be getting is IV and will be either in the arm or my hand. Is it my choice as to where it is? Getting it in my arm doesn't seem like a nice though, the hand seems better for me.. When I was a child( I'm a teen now) I believe I got sedation to get some teeth out, however the dentist then sprayed some very cold spray which totally numbed my arm, and then I believe put the needle in. Does every anesthetist have this spray? Would my dentist do anything if I requested this? The anesthetist is from a local hospital, which comes up to do the sedation. My dentist also explained I'd still have to get my gums numbed via injections, however this does not bother me - I probably won't know it's happening through sedation! Last time all I remember is just 'coming round' in the chair with my baby teeth in a little box thing (Alright I was 7 )and not remebering anything. I'm terrified of needles, and everyway I look I'll just have to get a needle to get it done. Hopefully the spray will be available! Cheers, Stephen.

Hi Stephen, there is a topical anesthetic cream available which will numb your arm or hand prior to the injection. It's called EMLA in the US. If you're in the UK, ask for Amatop (slightly better than EMLA even, but both are extremely effective). They need to be applied about 20 or 30 minutes prior to the injection, so the best thing to do would be to let your dentist know you want this. That way, you can work out the timing. Topical anesthetics may also be available in spray form, but creams seem to be more common. I'm not sure if you can choose where to have the venflon placed (arm or hand), maybe they will have a preference, maybe not. Again, it's something to ask your dentist. Hope this helps !

They tried to give me one in the hand. They couldn't so they tried in my arm instead... Both times I didn't feel anything because they had rubbed some numbing stuff on my hand. I did feel a miniature pinch but I've had paper cuts that hurt way way worse. It felt kind of like a quick pinch and thats all. I couldn't look though. The next time they had me so busy talking I didn't even notice they had started the IV. I'm very afraid of all needles so I completely understand how you feel. Then I was in lala land to say the least. You'll do great. The needles are itty bitty so you barely feel them at all if any...

Thanks Letsconnect and Nicole Apolgies for the late reply.. Well I phoned the dentist today and spoke to him personally and asked for the Ametop, and he said it's no problem at all, and that they'll arrange it for me! I'm not worried at all about the treatment now, and so everything will go fine.. Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated! ;D
