I wanted to give an update on my treatment. I had a tooth pulled a little over 2 weeks ago. For the first 5 days after I was ok, than I began having alot of pain. At first he thought the pain was due to a cancer sore I had, but I had to go back the next day, because the pain got worse, and he thought it was dry socket. He packed the area and returned 2 day later. I still had pain, but when he tried to repack it, bone was filling in so he put me on antibiotics. The pain was bad last week, and I could not sleep, so I called in to get pain medicine, it took 2 days to get that called in, but when I finally started taking that, and got some sleep, I felt much better. Well I went to see the dentist today and the pain is much better, still there, but not as bad. He said the bone is filling in. I have to go back in two weeks and then we will see what we are going to do next. I know I need fillings, possibly a root canal on one tooth, and probably a partial on the bottom, as I can not afford the implants. I really want to get the teeth filled so that I do not have to go through anything like the pain I went through last week.
I had teeth pulled a little over a year ago and did not have any problems, but this time I did. I don't want to chance it again by stopping treatment out of the fear of the drill (which terrifies me) so I will keep a stiff upper lip and just keep going. .

Sorry to hear it wasn't a canker sore after all and that you had to go through all this pain, but it sounds like it's healing up fine now - which is great news . For some reason, women are more prone to things like dry socket than men . You've come so far in such a short time - give yourself a pat on the back !! And let us know how things go when you go back!

Thanks! I'm a little nervous about the next appointment, because we are going to discuss what we will do next. I know we will probably dicuss a partial, but he did say that it will be difficult, because I have boney growth inside the lower jaw, not impossible, but difficult is what he said. I think they call it a mandibular tori. I have read that sometimes they have to smooth that bone down in order for the partial to fit. I hope thats not necessary I am entering a slow period at work now so I want to see what needs to be done with the remaining teeth on the bottom (I have 10 teeth left) I want to make sure I don't lose them too, so I must keep going. My relative that worked for this dentist said I just need to keep on him to check the other teeth, because he has such a busy practice sometimes he will forget things. I was already to say something yesterday, but he said to return in 2 weeks to discuss where we are going to go from here. I'm glad I didn't have to bring it up, but I am quite nervous about that discussion.

It might be an idea to find out how much an implant would cost, because with implants, you can often stretch things out a bit in terms of paying for it (e. g. pay for the actual implant placement in one year, let it all heal up, then do the implant crown the next year). Costs vary from region to region, so I wouldn't automatically rule it out, considering that an implant might well save you money in the long term, especially if it's only one tooth you need to replace.

I would love to have that option, however ther are 4 missing teeth, and in my area implants run around $3000-$4000 a tooth, way out of my price range. If I could afford it I would get implants no doubt about it, but I just cannot afford them now or in the near future.

If some of the missing teeth are the very back molars, it may not be absolutely necessary to replace them... 12 teeth can be plenty, but it depends on your arch. What I'm saying is, I wouldn't dismiss any options until you've discussed them with your dentist (I was assuming from what you said about how busy he is that you haven't gotten round to an in-depth discussion yet )

No, we haven't discussed treatment in depth yet. The only thing we discussed was the fact that if we did the partial it would be difficult, but not impossible, because of the bone....My relative said if he can't get a good fit, it would have to be removed. Believe me if I could afford implants, that would be my first choice. I may be able to afford 1, but not 2,3, or 4. No insurance, just a dental discount plan and that may take 20% off of the price, but that would still be out of my reach. On a different note, I finally can say that the tooth pain isn't so bad now, because on my way home last night, someone slammed into the back of my car. Now the rest of my body hurts, so the tooth isn't so bad...LOL. Careful what you ask for you just might get it. I wanted to forget about the mouth pain and now I have

OH NOOO !!! So sorry to hear about that - hope you're OK ?? (with regards to the dental thingy, all I'd suggest is to go through all the options, and see how they compare financially, including the scenario of having to reduce the jawbone, having only 2 implants if that's a possibility, etc. - especially if you're not too sure about the actual charges)

I'm OK, just sore. Actually I just got a new SUV last May and was debating on a smaller car. Boy am I glad I didn't do that. My car just has scratches on the plastic molding surrounding my bumper, but the other guys entire front end was smashed up. My back and neck took the bront, so thats where I hurt. Re: Dental thingy I will check all options, but I am leaning toward the partial. I do want to address the status of my other teeth before they get any worse first though. I do not look forward to it, especially any drilling , but I know I can not allow them to get worse.

Sounds like a pretty bad smash - I'm glad to hear you got away so lightly, by the sound of it

Thanks I am just glad that my car has these new headrests that come up higher and go slightly forward to prevent neck injuries. That really saved me. I felt my jaw jut forward on impact, which usually indicates my TMJ will flare (which it started to), but I took some advil and applied moist heat and so far so good, some ear pain, but if not for the special headrest, would have had whiplash, which would have caused more problems with my TMJ. Obviously someone was watching over me.

Implants...
I had my dentist place 2 implants last week. This took me back to the first molar. I can eat comfortably and when I pay off these two I will have two more placed to take me back to the 2nd molar. Then, I'm done... I know the cost is huge but I must say that they are so worth every penny. It's like having your real teeth back! The lower partial is a pain to get used to. Even worse if you are dealing with a full denture. It just kind of sits there... The tori situation stinks. I had the same problem. They did surgery to remove it, I don't want to scare you but healing from that was not the best of experiences of my life. The first week I was heavily medicated and I was in pain. I did lose weight though! :0) Hope you don't have to go through it.
Good Luck Nicole

Thanks!! I would like to do the implant thing, however do to the fact that I can not dwindle my savings as my parents (both in there mid 70's) live with me, that is not an option at this time. I had to claim bankruptsy after my divorce 8 years ago, so Care Credit will not be an option for two more years. Possibly after that I can think about implants. For now I will probably have to consider a partial to balance my bite out, so that I do not cause my TMJ to flare up. The tori is what worries me though. Did your dentist remove it or did you go to an oral surgeon???

I went to an Oral Surgeon. I had them put me on Twilight Sleep. I was a loopey chick for a few good hours. I slept the whole way home and Ed just poured me into bed. Pain was pretty bad at first, (Felt like an abcess in the lower middle of my jaw). Oweee...
It's not excruciating pain, it is just really tender and you are constantly reminder it is there with every tongue movement.
I ate pudding and soups for about two weeks until I could eat soft foods. Blegh! Talk about really hating soup! Do not get campbells soup the salt burns. Get soup that has less sodium counts. I made some of them myself for better flavor and froze them in small containers the week before. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen but it was definitly worth it!

Thanks for the info I don't know if he will try to fit a denture first or he will say it will have to be removed, but my next appointment is one week from today 8-)EEk not looking forward to that. I know that I still need to have filling done, so maybe we won't discuss the denture yet. I would rather discuss everything that needs to be done, so I know what to expect. Sometimes he is really busy and we just touch on issues. I will just have to try and slow him down and discuss everything. My appointment is a half hour after opening, so he shouldn't be too busy yet I hope. Just need to make sure I don't feakout and just say ok ok ok, as I do not talk much when I am nervous
