RULES:
The "support" forum is for peer support, unless you also suffer or used to suffer with dental phobia or fear) - the exceptions to this rule are Gordon and Mike, our moderators, who can mingle all they like . You can read more about them here:
dentalphobia.proboards27.com/index.cgi?board=dentistry&action=display&thread=1100004305
Other dentists are also allowed to post, and if you're enthusiastic or have a "knack" for anxious patients, you're encouraged to do so! However, posts which could be interpreted as condescending, directive, or scary in any way will be edited or deleted at the discretion of the administrator and moderators.
Discussion and presenting differering points of view are allowed. Explicit descriptions of dental procedures will be moved to the "dentistry questions" section. Escalating arguments will be moved to the "discussion" section. Please remember rule number 5 of the general guidelines and rules: "no scare tactics. You can describe bad experiences, but 'dire warnings' dressed up as advice will most likely be edited, if they don't reflect reality."
RECOMMENDATIONS:
We recommend that any counselling is carried out by a qualified health professional in person. Things are not always as straightforward as they may seem, and messy and even dangerous situations can arise . It is impossible to accurately gauge a person's true feelings over the internet (because we can't see their body language, hear their tone of voice, and pick up other important cues), unless we know the other person extremely well. Advice, suggestions, ideas, and sharing what worked for you are all fine, because people can either take suggestions or leave them . Obviously, the boundaries between "counselling" and "suggestions" are pretty fluid, so when making suggestions, try and phrase things in a way which allows the other person to make their own choices (e. g. "some people find it helpful to do this-or-that", or "what worked for me was...") .
