Description: Norma Howes’ presentation will explore the psychological and neurobiological reasons for phobic and avoidant behaviour as it particularly affects patients attending for dental treatment. She will also give very practical advice on strategies to avoid retraumatising the dentist/patient relationship, allowing more effective treatment and better patient care.
Jatin Desai will present the results of his pioneering approach to dental phobia. His innovative pilot scheme combines the skills of experienced counsellors with the expertise of dental practitioners to provide a successful cost and time-effective solution.
Course Aims and Objectives: 1. To provide an understanding of dental phobia and its effects on the individual.
2. To give dentists and their teams practical guidance and advice on how to deal with phobic patients.
3. To consider the effects on dental staff of the secondary stress engendered by phobic patients and the identify healthy coping strategies.
Speakers: 1. Norma Howes, Forensic Psychologist and Counsellor. She is involved in training police, social workers, health and education staff on all aspects of childhood trauma and its effects. She has a private practice working with adults and children, most of whom have experienced severe trauma. Norma is also a member of a Child Trauma Team, where she is involved in both assessment and therapeutic services for children.
